Fourth Quarter Scoring Lifts Drexel Past Hampton, 50-47

HAMPTON, Va. – The Drexel women's basketball team used a 17-point fourth quarter to defeat the Hampton Pirates, 50-47. The Dragons entered the fourth quarter, trailing by five points.

Now with a 16-8 record overall, Drexel has secured its 12th straight winning season.
Laine McGurk led the Dragons in scoring 15 points. The junior made five field goals and converted five tries from the charity stripe.
Amaris Baker checked in with 11 points on four field goals. The graduate student grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Hampton opened the scoring with a bucket 55 seconds in, Drexel launched into a 9-point run that led to a Hampton timeout with 6:16 remaining in the quarter. Hampton then scored 10 points and held Drexel to six points to close the first quarter, 15-12 in favor of Drexel.
Hampton took its first real lead of the game halfway through the second quarter, in the middle of the team's seven-point run. While ultimately, being outscored by the Pirates, 12-9, Drexel was able to tie the game at the end of the half. The Dragons forced 12 turnovers in the first half and took 19 more shots than the home team as well.
Hampton extended its lead to five in the third quarter after outscoring Drexel 14-9. Drexel managed to only take nine shots in the third quarter and was found the bottom of the basket twice.
Drexel opened the fourth frame on a 10-3 scoring run that led into the media timeout. At the end of the run, Julia Garcia Roig took the ball to the basket and gave Drexel its first lead since there was 7:48 left in the second quarter. The Pirates were unable to climb back into the game, pulling as close as one point with 1:25 remaining.
