WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cody Walsh punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio Saturday at the EIWA Championships. Walsh cruised to a 8-0 major decision, collecting the first NCAA bid of his career.
Overall, Drexel finished fifth out of 12 teams with 109 points. Lehigh took the overall spot with 163.5 points, followed by Navy (135.5), Bucknell (126.5) and Army (117).
Desmond Pleasant took home third place at 125 pounds, the best finish of his career. The redshirt senior first defeated Army's Charlie Farmer in the consolation semifinals with a takedown at the buzzer. In the third-place match, Pleasant recorded another late victory, recovering from an early deficit to secure a takedown with seconds remaining on the clock.
Kyle Waterman followed with a third place finish of his own. The bout went to sudden victory after each wrestler could only manage a point each. With just one second left in overtime, Waterman managed to get the takedown and the win.
Nate Schon came close to becoming Drexel's first EIWA Champion at heavyweight, falling to Lehigh's Nathan Taylor in the championship match. Schon joins Walsh as Drexel's two NCAA qualifiers. Walsh advanced to the 3rd place match, but well by a 18-9 major decision.
All ten Dragons finished on the podium for the second consecutive season. Navy was the only other program to accomplish the feat.
