Both Men’s and Women’s Programs Collect Overall Points Title
CHERRY HILL, N.J. — The Drexel men's Varsity 8+ captured gold at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday on the Cooper River. The Dragons secured five gold medals, the most in program history. The Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+, 3rd Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and 2nd Varsity 4+ all took the top spot as Drexel collected six medals overall.
With the V8+ win, the Dragons automatically qualify for the IRA National Championships. In addition, the Dragons earned their fifth consecutive men's points title, as both programs secured the overall points championship for the third straight year.
The Dragons avenged their loss last season, taking down the reigning Dad Vail champion boat of Temple. The Owls jumped out to an early lead, with Drexel sitting just a seat back at the opening 500 meters. The two crews were dead even at the midway point before Drexel surged ahead, moving into a three-seat lead with 500 meters remaining.
The crew of Luke Joseph (Coxswain), Ben Werber (Stroke), Kyle Brown, Matthew Kennedy, Jono Andersson, Justus Bormann, Milo Epstein, Jakob Mauntel and Andrei Malis (Bow) crossed the line at 5:37.12 in Krall IV, 1.23 seconds ahead of Temple.
The 2V8+ team won by taking gold for the third consecutive season, finishing ahead of Temple and La Salle with a time of 5:48.800. The 3V8+ also cruised to victory, earning their first gold since the 2022-23 campaign.
The Varsity 4+ team also won gold for the third consecutive season, as the 2V4+ was victorious for the first time since 2018.
