Vidas Athletic Complex, located at 4215 Powelton Avenue, is home to the Dragons’ intercollegiate level field sports, which include Men’s & Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey, Softball, Tennis, and Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse. Within the past few years, the complex has gone through a complete evolution, from replacing entire fields to even building a brand new one.
Robert Buckley, ’58, a former two-sport student-athlete at Drexel and current Board of Trustees member, has been the quintessential base for many of these projects coming to fruition. During the summer of 2017, Buckley Field was completely replaced and upgraded to EdelGrass. In addition to a new playing surface, the team areas also received a makeover conducive to a successful Division I Field Hockey program.
Directly across from Buckley Field lies the newly constructed Maguire Field. Made possible by a generous donation from Jim and Frannie Maguire, the brains behind the Maguire Foundation, the Sprint Turf synthetic field is not only the main practice football facility for West Catholic High School, but also serves as a practice field for many teams. In addition, many teams host round-robins and other tournaments successfully through the use of this field.
Drexel’s Softball Field lies across from Maguire Field, and has seen a number of cosmetic upgrades through the past few years. A new windscreen encompasses the field, donning a fresh and intimidating pair of Dragon eyes peering through the center. In addition, renovated dugouts, now with protective fencing in front of them, sit on either side of the field. After much consideration, new fencing was built near the warning track to ergonomically allow fans to have a clear view of the field.
Buckley’s namesake also extends to the Complex’s nine tennis courts, which were also resurfaced in the summer of 2017. New windscreens also came with the upgrade, as well as bleacher seating and program holders for spectators.
Vidas Field saw a complete transformation in the summer of 2015. The Shaw Turf field boasts brand new artwork, with a large Dragon head anchoring the midfield, and navy blue turf that borders the field. In addition, permanent soccer goals were installed, as well as a two-floor press box. Notable amenities within the press box include air-conditioning, seating on both floors, a state of the art sound system, and video perches. With its wide array of athletes and teams, Vidas is permanently lined to accommodate for Soccer, Men’s Lacrosse, and Women’s Lacrosse.
Kopp Lounge and Patio were also renovated, with a brand new gas grill installed in the outdoor seating area. Built into a stone grilling station, this area plays host to all kinds of events, from postgame tailgates to athletic department lunches.
Within the Fieldhouse, each team has their own respective locker room. In addition, coaching staffs have their own offices and areas. The Fieldhouse has two visiting locker rooms equipped with restrooms and showers as well as a fully functioning Equipment Room.
