Erich Shuler is entering his first spring season after joining the Drexel Rowing staff in February 2018 as an assistant coach.
Prior to Drexel, Shuler spent eight seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Virginia's men's rowing program. His primary responsibilities were coaching the novice squad and recruiting high school and walk-on athletes. It was his second stint as an assistant coach at the school
While at Virginia, the novice eight won the 2013 American Collegiate Rowing Association National Championship.Over Shuler's eight seasons at UVA, his novice eights and novice fours won numerous gold, silver and bronze medals at the Knecht Cup, Murphy Cup, Lubbers Cup, the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship and the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championship (novice eight racing in the varsity eight event). In addition, the top novice eights took home silver and bronze medals from the Dad Vail Regatta and gold and silver medals from the American Collegiate Rowing Association Championship.
Before returning to Virginia for a second tenure, Shuler took time away from rowing to work as a personal trainer. In the years prior, Shuler served as head coach at the University of North Carolina and at George Washington University for one year each after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia.
In the summer of 1995, Shuler was an assistant coach for the United States pre-elite women's rowing team, which won numerous U.S. national championships. Five of those women went on to row in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Shuler graduated from the University of Virginia with a master's degree in exercise physiology in 1997 and in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in English. He holds certifications in Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Certification in Applied Functional Science (CAFS) and as a Titleist Performance Institute, Level 1 Certified Trainer for Golf (TPI-1). Shuler is married with three children.
