Kathy O’Brien came to Drexel in 2000. She was promoted to Drexel's Associate Athletics Director for Academic in February 2017. Prior to this, O'Brien spend six years as Drexel's Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Support Services. Before that she served as the assistant director of academic support services for six years and CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator for four years. O’Brien came to Drexel after serving as an academic coach for the Play it Smart program at Benjamin Franklin High School in Philadelphia.
O'Brien oversees all aspects of the John and Jinnie ACHIEVE Center and Dragon Lounge. The ACHIEVE Center is charged with ensuring student-athletes are making academic progress toward their degree and ensuring that our student-athletes are in compliance with the NCAA Academic Eligibility Requirements. Also, the ACHIEVE Center is charged with organizing and facilitating programs that will enhance the total development and experience of our student-athletes.
O’Brien serves as the liaison to the University’s provost office and the office of student conduct and community standards. She also serves on the University’s Learning Alliance Committee, Advising Lead Committee, Faculty Senate, Athletic Senator and Faculty Senate, Student Life Committee
O’Brien has been an active member of The National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) since 2011. She served on the Board of Directors as Region 1 Director from 2018 – 2020.
O’Brien graduated from Penn State University in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She earned her master’s degree in sports psychology from Temple University in 2000.
