With nearly three decades of experience in college athletics and higher education, Phil Denne joined Drexel in 2020 as the associate director of development for athletics and affinity groups. In this role, he develops and executes a comprehensive integrated strategy to support The Dragon Club, annual giving, communications, stewardship and constituent engagement for Drexel’s athletic programs. He previously spent 25 years at his alma mater, Saint Joseph’s University, including 13 years in university advancement and athletic development.
At SJU, Denne oversaw the development communications program for SJU Athletics, executing a comprehensive annual communications and solicitation strategy for the Hawk Athletic Fund. He previously served as a lead member of the advancement communications team during the University’s most recent comprehensive campaign With Faith and Strength to Dare. The campaign featured several high-level initiatives which helped to transform SJU’s athletics facilities, including the Ramsay Basketball Center, the renovation of Hagan Arena, on-campus fields for baseball, softball and field hockey and new locker rooms and coaches offices. He has received multiple CASE Awards for multimedia and video production.
Denne began his career in 1994 as a member of SJU’s athletic communications team. He was a key member of the staff in 2003-04, when the men’s basketball team completed its historic perfect regular season and was ranked number one in the nation. He also supported athletic development and served as executive producer of the Saint Joseph’s Sports Network. He is the recipient of 11 CoSIDA Awards for excellence in publications.
In addition to his time on Hawk Hill, Denne spent one year as director of public relations and marketing for the Continental Basketball Association’s Pittsburgh Xplosion.
A native of Strongsville, Ohio, he earned his undergraduate degree from SJU and completed his master’s degree at Temple University. He resides in Newtown Square, Pa. with his wife and three children.
