Philadelphia, Pa. – The Dragons (5-12-1, 2-9 CAA) played aggressively and used solid passing to take a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Delaware (8-8-3, 3-7-1 CAA) Friday evening at Vidas Field. Drexel's #Christine Murta# scored at the 76:26 mark and the Dragons held the Blue Hens scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Freshman #Carly Snyder# got the Dragons on the scoreboard first to set the pace for the match. Following a Dragon corner kick, junior #Aleka Yiantsos# sent a cross in front of Delaware's goal to senior #Erin Williams#, whose head grazed the ball. It was Snyder that eventually connected for the first goal of the game, 10:49 into the first half.
Early In the second half senior #Stacey Blevins# almost scored an insurance goal for the Dragons as she blasted the ball from 10 yards out that hit the crossbar. With 28:43 remaining in the game, Delaware's Lindsay James evened the score, 1-1, when she found herself in the midst of a scramble in front of Drexel's goal. James tapped the ball into the net as Drexel goalkeeper #Kaitlin Bond# was about to make the save.
Bond finished with two saves in goal and Delaware goalkeeper Bonnie Mills made two stops and Annie Bevan made three. Drexel dominated the match, taking seven shots on goal to Delaware's three. Drexel held the advantage in shots, 14-8, and corner kicks, 2-1.
The Drexel seniors were on fire, with #Sherriann Steadman# taking two shots and one shot on goal, Blevins blasting one shot and Murta firing four shots and two shots on goal. The Dragons also got excellent play from seniors Williams, #Ashley Nettuno# and #Jenna Carson# who helped end their careers and Drexel's season with a victory at Vidas Field.
