Philadelphia, Pa. – Freshman phenom Fabio Assumpção (Alves, Brazil/Colegio Batista Brasiliero) staked Drexel to an early lead over Howard (1-1) with a goal from 25 yards out less than five minutes into the final match of the Drexel Invitational Tournament. The Dragons' defense made the single tally hold up for the duration as Drexel (4-1) defended its tournament crown from last season.
Drexel dominated the offensive end for the majority of the match and outshot Howard 21-5 while working to earn 10 corner kicks to the Bison's four. Cory Robertson (Flagstaff, Ariz./Horizon) made three saves, including one from point-blank range in the final two minutes, to preserve his second shutout of the season.
Assumpção earned the tournament's Offensive MVP honor, marking the second consecutive year that a Dragon freshman has won the award. Howard's Marcel Storer was named the tournament's Defensive MVP. Storer along with All-Tournament keeper Christopher Taylor helped the Bison hold their opponents to just two goals in the tournament.
Striker Nasheed Sabree also made the All-Tournament Team for Howard along with Assumpção, defender Pat McCaffery (Langhorne, Pa./La Salle College) and midfielder Anthony Bafile (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) for Drexel.
Howard was runner up in the tournament followed by La Salle and UMBC in third and fourth respectively.
