
Three Dragons Place at Season-Opening Bearcat Open

Binghamton, N.Y. - Three Drexel wrestlers, including a pair of heavyweights, placed in the top six at the Bearcat Open. Sophomore Bryant Deinhardt claimed second place at 285 pounds while classmate Kyle Frey took sixth place in the weight class. Senior Steve Mytych captured fifth place at 125 pounds after going 5-1 in the tournament.
Deinhardt, a former New York State Champion, cruised through the first two rounds after registering a win by fall and a major decision victory to set up a third-round meeting with Macig Jochym of Cornell. Deinhardt pulled out a 4-3 victory in overtime to advance to the championship semifinals. He met Zach Zorada of Brown and earned a 8-1 decision to earn a berth in the final. Zach Hammond of Cornell pulled a 3-2 win in the championship.
Frey battled back from an opening round defeat to Rutgers' D.J. Russo, 3-2, to take sixth place at 285 pounds. He won his first two matches in the consolation bracket, including a win by fall, to set up a match with Hofstra's Devon Smith. Frey registered a major decision win by outpointing Smith, 14-6. He then disposed of Sacred Heart's Bill Beiermeister in overitme, 5-3. Frey won the next match by medical forfeit then advanced after an injury default. He dropped the fifth-place match to Brandon Williamson of Nassau.
Mytych earned a technicall fall victory over Sacred Heart's Paul Galipeau at 6:10 before dropping Boston's Freddy Santaite, 3-2. Mytych narrowly lost to Cornell's Frank Perrelli, 10-7, in the third tiebreaker as the senior dropped into the consolation bracket. Perrelli went on to win the tournament. In his first match in the consolation bracket, Mytych outpointed Drew Bloss of Brown, 6-1. He then earned wins over Galipeau and Santaite again to claim fifth place in the event.
