Newark, Del. – Randy Oveneke's (Antwerpen, Belgium/Saint-Anna College) jumper with 1:01 to play gave Drexel the led for good and Scott Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) made a pair of free throws in the final minute as Drexel defeated arch-rival Delaware, 62-60. Delaware had a chance for the win, but Herb Courtney's three-pointer as time expired bounced off the rim.
The Dragons (11-16, 4-11 CAA) led by as many as 11 early in the second half as Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) scored the first eight point of the second half for the Dragons. Delaware came right back and tied the game when Courtney scored six straight points to make it 52-52. He scored on a short jumper and was fouled and then hit a three-pointer at the 5:18 mark to even the score. The Hens (11-14, 8-7 CAA) tied the game on three more occasions but never led in the second half.
The Dragons shot 59 percent from the floor in the first half and led 32-26 at intermission. Elegar was 6-for-7 from the floor in the half and had six rebounds to lead the team. The senior finished the game with 22 points and 12 rebounds, giving him his ninth double-double of the year. Evan Neisler (Raleigh, N.C./Boston College) came off the bench early as Oveneke had two quick fouls and responded with seven points and three boards. Drexel trailed in the early going but held the Blue Hens off the board for almost five and a half minutes during an 11-0 run.
Elegar finished 10-for-14 from the floor. Rodgers added 16 points and made both of his long-range attempts. Hawthorne was also in double figures with 11 points. All five Delaware starters had at least 10 points. Herb Courtney was the team's high scorer with 13 points and also had nine rebounds.
Drexel shot 52 percent from the floor in the game and was 5-for-7 from behind the arc. The Dragons held the Blue Hens to just 39.6 percent shooting from the floor and the Hens made just four of their 18 long-range attempts.
