Childs Picks Up Career Division I Victory 400 with 34-9 Win Over Sacred Heart

Fairfax, Va. - Drexel wrestling defeated Sacred Heart, 34-9, at the Colonial Athletic Association Duals held on the campus of George Mason. The victory marked the 400th in Jack Childs' career at Drexel. He is collegiate wrestling's active leader in victories. The Dragons dropped their other two matches at the duals with a 34-3 loss to No. 21 Old Dominion and a 26-15 defeat at the hands of Binghamton. Jon Oplinger continued his impressive senior season with a 3-0 record at the duals.
The Dragons opened the duals with a decisive victory over Sacred Heart. Michael Gomez won by forfeit at 125 pounds before Frank Cimato gave Drexel an early 11-0 lead with a technical fall of Michael Impellizeri at 4:00. The Pioneers came storming back with a win by fall at 141 pounds and a win by decision at 149 pounds to draw to within 11-9. Dan Konno responded for Drexel with a 5-1 victory that spurred a six-match winning streak that gave Childs his milestone victory. Oplinger's major decision win at 197 pounds was his 20th of the season as the Bath, Pa. native has now won at least 20 matches in all four of his seasons.
In Drexel's second match of the day, the Dragons ran into 21st-ranked Old Dominion. While the scoreboard read 34-3 in the Monarch's favor at the end of the dual, most of the matches were tightly contested. After Old Dominion opened with a technical fall win at 125 pounds, Frank Cimato nearly knocked off Kyle Hutter but was edged, 4-3. Old Dominion won the next two matches with bonus points but Dan Konno gave Kaylen Baxter a scare at 157 pounds before falling 6-3. At 174 pounds, Dave Woodall dropped tough 6-5 decision while 184-pounder Justin Wieller fell to Joe Budi, 2-0. Drexel's lone victory came from Oplinger who won convincingly over nationally ranked Jesse Strawn, 11-6. Roy Dragon finished the match with a 2-0 win over Drexel's Kyle Frey at 285 pounds.
Drexel wrapped up the day with a 26-15 defeat at the hands of Binghamton though the Dragons took four of the 10 matches. Drexel dug itself a hole as the Dragons dropped five of the first six matches with the lone victory coming at 133 pounds where Cimato pulled out an 8-3 decision over Robert Slavin. Woodall put an end to the Bearcats run with a 5-3 win at 174-pounds but BInghamton clinched the match at 184 pounds as Josh Patterson pinned Wieller just 30 seconds into the match to give the Bearcats a 26-6 lead. Oplinger picked up his third win of the day with a technical fall triumph over Carl Korpi. Frey finished the day with a major decision victory over Dan Bittner, 17-6.
