Box Score
Philadelphia – Freshman Nathan Page ended a frenetic contest that saw 11 goals touch net when he planted a low liner in the right side of the net off a feed from Andrew Goldberg to give Drexel a 6-5 win in double overtime and send the crowd at Vidas Field into a frenzy. Drexel (5-3, 1-0) scored a season-high six goals in front of a season-best crowd on Alumni Day. Fabio Assumpcao and Andrew Goldberg both scored twice and dished out an assist in the high-scoring affair. Five different players scored for Towson (3-5, 0-2), who saw a two-goal lead vanish in the second half before falling with four minutes left in the second extra period.
Trailing 5-4 with less than four minutes left in regulation, Goldberg fought his way to the ball after a scramble on the right side of the goal box. With the keeper effectively screened while his defenders sorted out the action, Goldberg slid a quick shot into the near side of the goal to tie the match at five apiece and set up the thrilling conclusion in overtime.
Drexel outshot Towson 23-17 and dominated offensive chances in the first half despite playing to a 2-2 draw through the first 45 minutes.
Towson set the pace for an offense-charged first half with a goal less than a minute and a half into the contest. The unconventional strike came off the foot of Tommy Appel-Schumacher who blasted an early ball in the direction of the goal box from 45-yards out in hopes of finding a striker making a run. Instead, Appel-Schumacher's in-ball flew over the head of keeper Tim Washam, and found its way into the left side of the net to give Towson a 1-0 lead.
Drexel responded to the improbable goal with a pair of scores within minutes of each other. A good build up by Nathan Page and Malcolm LeBourne on the left side of the goal box was rewarded when a defender fouled LeBourne in the act of taking a shot. The infraction set up a penalty kick which Fabio Assumpcao converted with a blast to the left side to tie the match in the 19th minute.
Less than two minutes later Assumpcao rolled a pass to Andrew Goldberg who lined up a blast from 20 yards out. Tigers' keeper John Steele dove and got a hand on the shot but the backspin from the deflection sent the ball into the goal.
Towson equalized in the 33rd minute when the Tigers drew a foul directly at the top of the goal box. Liam Maloney directed his low liner to the left of the Drexel wall and into the goal to knot the match at 2-2.
Even after four goals in the first period, the intensity of the match did not diminish in the second half as both teams put three more in net before time expired on regulation.
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead on a goal that was eerily similar to the first one of the contest. Nicolas Bermudez-Roa launched a shot from just over the midfield line. Again the high sailing ball found its way over Washam and into the net to put the Tigers on top with just under 25 minutes to go.
Less than two minutes later Juan Cabrales emerged with the ball in a three-way collision between the keeper, Justin Johnson and himself. With Washam out of the way Cabrales dribbled it home for the goal that put Towson on top 4-2.
Far from folding with a two goal deficit, the Dragons came out with renewed vigor. Fabio Assumpcao made it a 4-3 contest with a curving shot from 25 yards out in traffic that found its way into the left side of the net in the 74th minute. The goal rekindled Drexel's intensity and the Dragons' comeback was on.
Nate Baker took a ball on the left side of the 18-yard box in the 77th minute and dribbled laterally to the right while evading three defenders. When he found enough space he unleashed a shot that rippled the right side of the net to tie the match at 4-4.
Towson pulled ahead once more with under eight minutes to play when Marco Mangione drew a foul just inside the box to set up a free kick opportunity. Mangione took the shot and converted past a diving Washam to make it a 5-4 Towson advantage.
But as the pace of the game dictated, that would not be the final word on the matter. Goldberg's equalizer came less than four minutes later to set up the Dragons for the thrilling victory in extra time.
Drexel's rookie keeper Tim Washam made five saves in his first start against a CAA opponent. John Steele made seven stops in net for the Tigers amidst the six goals that crossed the plane.
The Dragons next travel to Delaware on Wednesday, Oct. 7 to take on the rival Blue Hens in a 7:00 p.m. match.
