Philadelphia - Drexel Director of Rowing Paul Savell led the Dragons to another strong finish as Crew wrapped its fall season with five triumphs in eight races at the Bill Braxton Regatta. The big weekend for the Dragons included a strong showing the previous day at the Frostbite Regatta. On the Schuylkill River on Sunday, the women's varsity eight, junior varsity eight and novice eight all triumphed while both men's novice boats won their finals.
The Dragons opened the day with a resounding victory in the women's varsity eight with the Marlene Buckley (stroke Candice Webb, Mallory Sykes, Julia Jackson, Dana Haneman, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Cassie Clawson, Mary Kain and cox Cate Khella) claiming victory by better than eight seconds over second-place Temple. Drexel's second varsity eight in the Annette Penoni (stroke Filip Topolovic, Jake Sloan, Marty Khait, Mike Gartland, Mike Golden, Pat McGann, Andrew Burns, Peter Schmidt and cox Randall Lee) were beat to the line by Ithaca but did cross ahead of Temple's second varsity eight. Drexel's top varsity eight lost a heartbreaker to Temple as the Owls crossed just 0.17 seconds ahead of the Vince Vidas (stroke Aleksander Radovic, Greg Pierce, Ernesto Del Valle, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Chris Hillenbrand, Liam O'Neill, Will Masters and cox Steve Matyas) but did defeat Marietta College.
Drexel second varsity eight won the junior varsity competition in the John Daskalakis (stroke Taylor Mondak, Moira Fleming, Brooke Wertan, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Asiya Mahmud, Jillian Skovran, Chloe Swansen and cox Alex Paulin) by more than three second over second-place Temple. The Drexel men's second and third varsity eights were unable to match the feat as the second varsity eight in the Annette Pennoni (stroke Filip Topolovic, Jake Sloan, Marty Khait, Mike Gartland, Mike Golden, Pat McGann, Andrew Burns, Peter Schmidt and cox Randall Lee) took second place while the third varsity eight in the Peggy Greenawalt (stroke Nick Buyse, Gregg Francis, Mike Mabkhouti, Steve Dove, Kevin Rorabaugh, Tim Scattergood, Aziz Maalik, Peter Eyrich and cox Michelle Lehmann) took fifth.
Drexel's novice women's novice eight got the Dragons back on the winning track with a triumph by more than 19 seconds in the Anna Marie (stroke Natasha Martines, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Samantha Cowan, Hayley Tintle, Katie Cheng, Brogan Piecara, Natalie Launchi and cox Mary Beth Geyer). The men's novice eight close the fall season with victories with the Class of '72 boat (stroke Scott Nordsiek, Dylan Siegfried, John Kile John Muir, Kameron Palagi, Cannan Colwick, John Luciani, Corey Barnes and cox Matt Westin) defeating Ithaca, UMass Lowell, Penn State and Binghamton and the Joseph Greipp (stroke Zach Antunes, Jason Browne, Tim Drake, Eric Szendrey, Paul Wisniowski, Lorenzo Albala, Kurt Linton, Adam Cordi and cox Arlynn Katz) defeated Bucknell, Marietta and Ithaca.
