Philadelphia, Pa. – Jamie Harris scored a career-high 22 points as Drexel defeated Penn at the Palestra, 58-49. The Dragons, who have now defeated the Quakers three straight times for the first time in school history, forced 18 turnovers and held the Quakers to just 35 percent shooting.
The Dragons (1-0) opened up a 12-point lead by scoring the first six points of the second half. Penn (0-4) got the lead down to 37-35 midway through the half when Rob Belcore scored on a lay-up. A few minutes later, with Drexel up 41-38, the Dragons put the game away with an 8-0 run. Harris started the rally with a jumper and Evan Neisler scored on the next possession. Kevin Phillip, who had a solid game off the bench, scored on a lay-up and then had a follow-up dunk after a Penn turnover to increase the lead to 49-38 with just 4:40 to play. The Quakers could only get the deficit down to eight as the Drexel defense played one of its best games of the season.
Neisler had his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Harris finished 8-for-14 from the floor and made six of his eight free throw attempts. Gerald Colds also finished in double figures with 10 points. Phillip had six points, six rebounds and three blocks in 19 minutes.
Zack Rosen led the Quakers with 13 points. Jack Eggleston and Mike Howlett each had double-doubles. Eggleston had 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Howlett had 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Drexel finished the game shooting a season-best 44 percent from the floor. The two teams combined to go 0-for-19 from behind the arc. Drexel finished without a three-pointer for the first time since Feb. 14, 1992, snapping a streak of 520 straight games with a three-pointer.
Drexel plays its first home game of the year on Friday afternoon against Vermont. It will be the first of three straight doubleheaders at the Daskalakis Athletic Center as the Dragons host the Philadelphia Subregional of the Legends Classic. Cornell and Toledo will also participate in the round-robin tournament which takes place from November 27-29.
