Dragons Split Season-Opening Duals in Maryland

College Park, Md. - Drexel wrestling opened its 2009-10 season with a split of two duals as the Dragons defeated York College, 37-9, before falling to 10th-ranked Maryland, 35-6. Drexel opened its win over York with three staright wins by falls. Kyle Frey and Brett McCurdy picked up the Dragons' victories against the Terrapins.
Drexel pulled away from York College early in the dual. Freshman Josh Yurasits recorded a technical fall at 125 pounds before senior co-captain pinned Alex Paladino at 2:26. Matt Dugan reeled off 18 points en route to a technical fall victory. John McDermott registered the Dragons' second pin of the day as he stopped Ryan Catton at 4:44. Freshman Joe Booth made his Drexel debut and picked up five team points with a technical fall of Alan Dyan as Booth did not surrender a point. At 165 pounds, Alex Rinaldi battled to a 3-2 decision. York picked up six team points after a Drexel forfeit at 174 pounds but Justin Wieller won a 3-2 decision at 184 pounds. After York won at 197 pounds, Frey ended the dual with a major decisiojn win over Thomas Fitzpatrick, 13-4.
Against No. 10 Maryland, the Dragons dug themselves in a 12-0 hole after three major decision losses at 125, 133 and 141 pounds. McCurdy stepped up at 149 pounds to win a 4-1 decision over Jon Kohler. Maryland won the next five matches to clinch the victory but Frey picked up his second win of the day at heavyweight. The junior won in sudden victory to claim a 7-5 win.
