Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel defense held St. Francis (Pa.) to a school-record nine points in the first half as the Dragons cruised to a 57-35 win on Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Dragons (5-5) held the Red Flash (3-6) to just three field goals in the first half. St. Francis shot 13 percent in the half (3-for-23) and fell behind by as many as 21 in the half. The nine points was the least Drexel ever allowed in the first half of a Division I game. The former mark was set during the 2005-06 against Old Dominion.
Samme Givens had the best game of his career for Drexel. The sophomore had career-highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds. He was 9-for-11 from the floor and scored the first nine points of the contest as Drexel raced out to a 9-0 lead. St. Francis finally got on the board with 14:21 to play when Chris Johnson scored on a jumper. Minutes later, the Dragons went on a 13-0 run to extend the lead to 25-4.
Givens was the only Dragon to reach double figures in scoring. Jamie Harris added nine points, five assists and no turnovers. Devin Sweetney led St. Francis with 15 points. The Red Flash was 0-for-13 from long range, the second time this season Drexel has held its opponent without a three-pointer this season.
Drexel embarks on a two-game road trip later this week. The Dragons travel to Northridge, Calif., to face Cal State Northridge on Friday. On the way back to Philadelphia, the Dragons meet nationally-ranked Kentucky on Monday, Dec. 21.
