The Drexel men's basketball team is back in action tonight with a game against Villanova at the Pavilion. The Wildcats are undefeated and ranked third in the nation. Tonight is the first meeting between the two teams since 2006, when Drexel upset the 'Cats, 81-76.
Drexel hosted the Philadelphia Subregional of the Legends Classic over the holiday weekend. The Dragons won the first two games before falling to Cornell in the final game on Sunday. That snapped a three-game Drexel winning streak. Drexel has shot much better as of late. After opening the year shooting 34 percent in its first three games, Drexel has shot at least 44 percent in the last four contests. On Sunday, the Dragons made 68 percent of their second-half shots, but couldn't overcome 18 turnovers as Cornell won by a score of 61-54. Drexel defeated Vermont in its first game of the tournament on Friday and downed Toledo on Saturday.
Junior Jamie Harris was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday. He scored a career-high 22 points in the Penn win and followed that up with 28 points in Drexel's win against Vermont. He leads the team in scoring, assists, steals and three-point percentage. Gerald Colds chips in with 11.6 points per game. With the injury to Leon Spencer, freshman Daryl McCoy is starting at one spot up front for Coach Flint. Fellow freshman Derrick Thomas has started every game at guard and has chipped in with 8.3 points per game.
The Wildcats are undefeated in their first six games and ranked third in the country. Senior Scottie Reynolds (13.8 ppg)leads a balanced scoring attack which has five players averaging in double figures. Corey Fisher averages 13 points and a team-high 4.3 assists per game. Fisher has already been to the foul line 52 times this season. He also leads the club in steals. Antonio Pena has gotten off to a good start for the 'Cats. The junior averages a double-double with 12.5 points and 10.5 boards per game. He is shooting just under 60 percent from the floor.
Villanova has defeated all but one of its opponents by at least six points. The only close contest was a 69-68 win against George Mason, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, in the first round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Classic. After that win, Villanova defeated No. 18 Dayton and Ole Miss on its way to the championship.
