Philadelphia - Drexel women's tennis is back in action this fall when the Dragons travel to Penn to participate in the Cissie Leary Memorial Tournament. The three-day tournament, named for a former Penn tennis coach who passed away, will begin on Friday, Sept. 25 and conclude on Sunday Sept. 27. All matches will be played at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on Penn's campus. The Drexel women are looking to follow up one of the most successful seasons in recent history. The Dragons set a program record for wins while going 14-3 last season. They posted a 2-1 mark in CAA play and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament.
Drexel returns its top five singles players from last year including first and second singles fixtures Zineb Hilali and Gozde Unkaya. Hilali posted a 13-4 overall record at first singles in her first season with the team after transferring to Drexel. Unkaya, who enters this season as the No. 115th ranked singles player by the ITA, went 16-2 at second singles last year.
The pair teamed up to post a 15-4 record at first doubles last year. Anahita Jagtiani and Elise Leizerovich are also back this season after going 9-2 in doubles play and earning a national ITA ranking after their performance last fall. Also rejoining the team this season is sophomore Sonja Stosic who joined the team during the spring season last year and turned in a strong 7-3 showing at fourth singles.
Drexel's first match of the day on Friday will be in doubles play when Emma Brook and Anahita Jagtiani square off against a pair of Penn Quakers at 8:00 a.m. on Court 2. Gozde Unkaya and Zineb Hilali, Drexel's top doubles team last year, will face Yale's duo of Sarah Lederhandler and Vicky Brook also at 8:00 on Court 4.
Emma Brook and Zineb Hilali will open the singles bracket during the second session of matches. Hiliali will play Temple's Lucie Pazderova on Court 6 and Brook will face Penn's Emily Wolf on Court 7.
A full schedule and results from the Cissie Leary Tournament will be posted daily on www.drexeldragons.com this weekend.
