Dragons Return to the Road, Take on Old Dominion at 2:00 Today
1/10/2010 6:57:03 AM | Women's Basketball
Norfolk, Va. - For the first time in more than a month, the Drexel women's basketball team will be playing outside the familiar territory of Philadelphia as the Dragons (8-5, 2-0) travel to play conference foe Old Dominion (3-9, 1-1) at 2:00 p.m. today. The contest is a rematch of an historic CAA semifinal victory for the Dragons last season, which ended the Monarchs' 17-year reign as CAA Champions.
Drexel enters the game after a tight 46-43 victory over William & Mary in which the Dragons were forced to hold off a second-half rally by the Tribe, despite holding an 18-point lead in the period. Gabriela Margninean, the freshly minted all-time leading scorer in the conference, will take the court for the first time since breaking Tamera Young's scoring record. Marginean recorded her fifth double-double of the season in the win over the Tribe. Drexel went 6-3 on its nine-game Philadelphia homestand and now holds an 8-5 mark overall.
Old Dominion comes into today's game following a wild 100-94 triple-overtime loss at Northeastern. The Lady Monarchs turned the ball over 40 times in the contest, allowing the Huskies to get back into the game after trailing by as many as 12 points. Old Dominion played a difficult non-confence schedule that featured five nationally ranked teams, including No. 2 Stanford and No. 4 Tennessee.
Old Dominion leads the all-time series against Drexel 10-3, but the Dragons have won the last two meetings. When Drexel defeated Old Dominion in the regular season and in the CAA Tournament last year, it became one of only four CAA teams to beat ODU twice in the same season. Today's game will be played at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va., a place where Drexel has never defeated the Lady Monarchs.
