Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will welcome back its alumni as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities on Sunday when the Dragons (11-6, 5-1) take on first-place Virginia Commonwealth (13-5, 6-0). The contest will tip at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised live on The Comcast Network.
The Dragons enter play coming off a tight 59-51 win over the George Mason Patriots on Thursday, which extened their home court CAA winning streak to 16 games. Gabriela Marginean led all scorers with 26 points and came up with six free throws in the final minute and 24 seconds that salted away the victory for Drexel.
Virginia Commonwealth extended its winning streak to eight straight games with a last-second three-pointer from D'Andra Moss to defeat Delaware 60-59 on Thursday. Moss led the Rams with 19 points while Courtney Hurt added 16 and Kita Waller had 14. VCU features a balanced scoring attack that has not lost its potency despite an injury to starter La'Tavia Rorie three games ago.
These two teams gave fans a classic contest on Feb. 26 of last season when Drexel pulled out a 74-69 overtime victory against the Rams. Jasmina Rosseel's three-pointer with 35 seconds left in overtime proved to be the momentum-changer in the Drexel victory, which propelled the team into sole possession of first place in the conference.
A number of Drexel basketball alumni and fans will be in the stands for the game, and prior to the contest the former Drexel greats will tip it up again in the annual alumni game. The noon contest between Drexel and VCU will cap a weekend of exciting Homecoming activities for Drexel alumns. For a full schedule of the weekend's events click here.
The game will be televised live on The Comcast Network. It is the first of three scheduled regular-season television games for the Dragons, which marks the most TV appearances ever for the team. Jon Gurevitch will be calling the game with Drexel women's basketball alumna Megan Keating ('92) supplying color analysis.
Fans can follow the game on the radio on WKDU 91.7 FM, Drexel's student-run station, with Pat Delsi and Mike Mazzeo calling the action. And livestats are also available for the game by clicking here.
