Philadelphia - Drexel opens conference play this afternoon in a rematch of the 2009 CAA Championship game, pitting the Dragons against the James Madison Dukes at 1:00 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. James Madison enters today's game with a 10-1 record in non-conference play and ranked No. 25 in both the coaches' and Associated Press national polls this week. Drexel (6-5), who won its first CAA Championship over the Dukes in Harrisonburg, Va. last season, enter today's game after a tough 60-55 loss to city rival Villanova.
The Dragons closed out non-conference play with a loss to the host Villanova in the championship of the Wildcat Classic on Dec. 29. Drexel held an 11-point lead at the break and led by as many as 12 points in the contest before allowing the 'Cats to come back in the final minutes of play to pull out the win. Kamile Nacickaite recorded her first career double-double in the final, with 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. She and Gabriela Marginean, who averaged 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the tournament, both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
James Madison defended its home court in the JMU Invitational Tournament, closing out the championship with a 74-65 win over Western Michigan on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Dawn Evans led the Dukes with 28 points and Lauren Jimenez, playing in just her second game of the season, came off the bench to score 21 points in 19 minutes. The Dukes only loss of the season came against No.7/8 Duke, 79-65, on Dec. 18.
Marginean is just 30 points away from matching the all-time career scoring record in the CAA, currently held by JMU alumna Tamera Young at 2,121. Today's game is the first time Drexel has faced a ranked opponent since losing to No. 21 Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament.
