William & Mary Defeats Drexel in CAA First Place Showdown

Philadelphia, Pa. –William & Mary held Drexel to just one field goal over the final 12 minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half and defeated the Dragons at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 73-48. The Tribe remained tied for the top spot in the CAA at 4-1, while Drexel fell to 3-2 in CAA play.
Despite shooting just 26 percent in the first half, the Dragons (8-9) trailed by just four points at 28-24. Jamie Harris scored nine of the team's 24 points. David Schneider scored 10 of his 19 points during the opening half. The Tribe, who entered the game fourth in the nation in least turnovers per game, committed an uncharacteristic eight turnovers in the early going.
Drexel's offense continued to struggle in the second half. Gerald Colds lay-in at the 14:55 mark and Kevin Phillip's dunk with just under eight minutes to play were the only Drexel field goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half. In the meantime, William & Mary's offense started to click. The Tribe shot a sizzling 65 percent in the second half on 15-for-23 shooting and converted all but one of its 14 free throws.
The Dragons had 18 offensive rebounds in the game, including nine by Samme Givens, but only scored two second-chance points. Givens finished with a game-high 13 rebounds. Colds led the team in scoring with 15 points, 11 of them coming from the line. Harris finished with 12, but was just 5-for22 from the field. Drexel finished shooting a season-low 24 percent. Quinn McDowell led William & Mary with 20 points.
Drexel begins a two-game road swing on Wednesday night at Towson. The Dragons visit Old Dominion on Saturday before returning home for a contest against James Madison on Jan. 20.
