Dragons Bring Home a Win in First Dual Match of the Season

Monmouth, N.J. - Drexel (1-0) came out swinging in its first dual women's tennis match of the season. The Dragons put away Monmouth (1-6) with authority, 6-1, on the road. The Dragons won both doubles matches and dropped just four games while winning first through fifth singles against the Hawks.
Gozde Unkaya and Elise Leizerovich won at first doubles 8-1 over Brooke Verdiglione and Dana Ferrari. Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa continued their strong doubles play by dispatching Katie Tierney and Reciel Arribe, 8-0 to give Drexel a point for doubles play.
On the singles side, Unkaya defeated Verdiglione in the first set and was up 3-0 when Verdiglione retired in the second. Elise Leizerovich won in straight sets at second singles over Ferrari 6-1, 6-0. Sonja Stosic blasted past Katie Tierney without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Zeynep Mafa won her first collegiate dual match, 6-2, 6-0 over Monmouth's Shelby Goldman playing at fourth singles. And Emma Brook wrapped up the Dragons' dominance with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Jessica Slinger at fifth singles.
Drexel is back in action next week when the Dragons travel to Dartmouth College to participate in the ITA Northeast regional tournament.
