Men's and Women's Crew Finish Out Year with Success on the Schuylkill

Philadelphia – Drexel saw six out of its 13 boats cross the line ahead of all others as the Dragons showed well in yet another dominate performance on the Schuylkill River.
Action kicked off early with the women's varsity eight A earning Drexel's first first-place finish. Coxswain Mary Catherine Khella, stroke Liz Bratton, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Juliana DeMarici, Taylor Mondak, Alexa Antonioli, Casondra Clawson, and bow Mollie Cusack recorded a time of 5:15.23 beating Rochester, Lehigh and Haverford.
In the next event, the men's varsity eight with coxswain Steve Matyas, stroke Kurt Linton, Lorenzo Albala, Aleksander Radovic, William Masters, Brian Timlin, Jacob Sloan, Anthony Fitipaldi and bow Kyle Fabel took first with a time of 4:33.80, more than seven seconds faster than second place Ithaca.
The women's varsity eight B bested five other boats when coxswain Alexandra Paulin, stroke Natasha Martines, Brooke Wertan, Colleen Owens, Elise Panacek, Jillian Skovran, Chloe Swansen, Asiya Mahumud and bow Brianna Simmers crossed the line in 5:20.25, securing Drexel's third consecutive first-place finish.
Racing out of lane two securing a second place finish was the men's junior varsity eight with coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Liam O'Neill, Nicholas Buyse, Dylan Siegfried, Michael Golden, Kevin Rorabaugh, Peter Schmidt, Michael Faust and bow Peter Eyrich. Their time of 4:40.87 was less than four seconds behind first-place Temple but just under eight seconds faster than third-place Ithaca.
In the next event, the wommen's freshman/novice eight with coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Shannon O'Donnell, Colleen Delaney, Kayla Wroblesky, Sloane Spurlock, Emily Fluharty, Alyssa Leahy, Sarah Mackenzie and bow Elizabeth Daugherty posted a time of 5:21.81 beating four others including city rival Philadelphia University by open water.
The men's freshman/novice eight followed suit with a first place time of 4:33.20 as coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Sebastian Ryan, Vanja Busic, Matt Ryan, Marcus DeMarici, Brent Basso, Steve Miner, John Pieper and bow Andrew Pope Starnes defeated four other boats out of lane two.
The four shells then took to the water as the women's freshman four with coxswain Dana Piccoli, stroke Caitlin Buser, Leigh Ann Loughery, Adrianna Moreno and bow Jackie Bender crossed the line in 6:16.74 behind only Rochester.
The men's freshman four recorded a time of 6:08.47 in a third place finish as coxswain Ashley Jordan, stroke Ryan McSpedon, Bob Mulholland, Peter Rampulla and bow Brian Kissam falling to Marietta and Colgate.
The men's light weight eight took the water next as coxswain Steve Matyas, stroke Liam O'Neill, Peter Schmidt, Andrew Pope Starnes, Kyle Fabel, Brennan Haydon, Jacob Sloan, John Luciani, and bow Adam Cordi crossed the line in 4:39.91 earning a second place finish behind only Marietta.
The women's varsity four A with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Amanda Dargay, Brogan Piecara, Mairin McKinlay and bow Kathie Cheng secured a second place finish with a time of 5:54.15 while the women's varsity four B with coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, stroke Jennifer Everett, Lillian Reed, Emily Barth and bow Victoria Bannister crossed the line in 6:53.00 in sixth place.
Capping the day were the men's varsity fours. Coxswain Matthew Weston, stroke Gregg Francis, Martin Khait, Gregory Pierce and bow Ernesto Del Valle recorded a time of 5:05.35 in a third place finish in the varsity four A. The varsity four B with coxswain Arlyn Kratz, stroke Paul Wisniowski, Scott Nordsiek, John Luciani III and bow Adam Cordi was scratched from the race and unable to record a time.
The weekend events on the Schuylkill mark the last races for men's and women's crew until they pick back up on Saturday, March 12, in a match up against The University of Delaware, La Salle and Saint Joseph's.
