Philadelphia - Drexel Women's Basketball will complete the Philadelphia portion of its schedule at 5:00 p.m. today as Villanova visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center for the first time. The Dragons (3-0) are facing their fourth consecutive city rival after emerging victorious against La Salle, Penn and Saint Joseph's to start the season. Villanova (4-1) has won three straight coming into this afternoon's contest, including a 69-68 overtime win against Lehigh in its last game. Fans who cannot make it to the DAC today can follow the action with live stats, streaming video and live audio, which are all accessible free of charge at Drexel Game Central. Drexel fans can also follow the action by visiting the mobile site or downloading the Drexel Sports app for the iphone and ipad.
Kamile Nacickaite and Taylor Wootton led the Dragons in a nail-biter against Saint Joseph's on Tuesday. Drexel pulled out a 50-47 win over the Hawks thanks to a big defensive stand in the final minute and free throws converted by Jasmina Rosseel and Marisa Crane in the waning seconds. Nacickaite compiled her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Wootton led the team in the early going and finished with a career-best 12 points.
Drexel's victory marked the first time in the program's history that it defeated three Philadelphia Big Five teams in the same season. A win today would match the team's best start ever, equaling the 4-0 mark to open the 2001-02 season.
Standing in the way of that distinction are coaching legend Harry Perretta and his Villanova Wildcats. Villanova is led this season by sharp-shooting Temple transfer Lindsay Kimmel, who is averaging more than four three-pointers and 15 points per game. The Wildcats have already defeated La Salle, Navy, Oral Roberts and Lehigh, with their lone loss coming to Delaware this season.
The Dragons will be looking to avenge a 60-55 loss to the 'Cats last season in the championship game of the Villanova Holiday Classic. Drexel surrendered an 11-poing lead in that game and the Wildcats snatched the victory with a pair of late three-pointers by Heather Scanlon. Gabriela Marginean led all scorers with 22 points and Nacickaite put together her first career double-double. Both Dragons earned placement on the All-Tournament Team.
Tip time today is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on 33rd and Market Street in Philadelphia. Fans can purchase tickets at the door, online or by calling 1-888-4-DREXEL.
