Austin Sommer Earns CAA Rookie Wrestler of the Month Honors

Philadelphia – Drexel's Austin Sommer (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Month for all competition prior to November 29 after starting his collegiate career with a 6-1 overall record. Sommer recently took the final match at 149 pounds to finish first at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational.
Sommer started off his collegiate career with a tough 3-2 loss to Joey Napoli of then 10th ranked Lehigh University. Sommer led Napoli 2-0 in the first period, but eventually Napoli rallied back for the victory. After the defeat, Sommer reeled off six consecutive victories. He earned a decision over The Citadel's Derek Royster and pinned Owen Wilkinson of Lock Haven in 3:55 at the Hershey Duals. Sommer earned a 10-0 major decision over Dalton Cunningham of Lock Haven, as well as a sudden victory overtime win against Alex Smith of Army at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational. He also wrestled fellow teammate John McDermott, earning a close 5-2 victory. Sommer's final match was against Blaine Woszczak of Ithaca where he earned a 5-2 decision. The victory gave him the championship at 149 pounds.
Sommer and the Dragons will be back in action on Friday and Saturday Dec. 3-4, as they compete in the Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
