Philadelphia - Old Dominion's Kathryn Kirk scored midway through the second overtime period to break a scoreless drought to defeat top seeded Drexel in the 2010 CAA Field Hockey Championship. The win propells the Lady Monarchs to the NCAA Championships while the Dragons and their 15-5 record will have to wait to see if the NCAA Selection Committee will award the team an at-large bid.
The game featured fantastic play from both teams as two of the highest scoring offenses in the conference had multiple scoring opportunities but were not able to capitalize in regulation due in large part to outstanding performances in the cage. Devon Seifert made six saves in the cage for the Lady Monarchs while Jenna Phillips stopped eight shots and held Old Dominion off the board until the final play.
Kirk broke free of the Drexel defense and headed toward the cage alone. She dribbled around a charging Phillips and was able to send the ball into the left side of the cage as the Lady Monarchs stormed the field.
The CAA Championships appearance was the fourth straight for the Dragons; no other conference team has gone to the last two CAA Championships. The game was the final appearance at Buckley Field for Drexel seniors Jen Cairone, Megan Keller, Christina Mastropaolo, Susan Ciufo, Laura Quenzer, Kim Tunell, Amanda Coffey and Brittney Hausman. Drexel compiled a 21-3 record in conference games over the past three seasons and has won at least a share of the CAA regular season title for the past two seasons.
