Givens' Double-Double Leads Dragons to Sixth Straight Win

Loretto, Pa. – Samme Givens had season-highs with 19 points and 16 rebounds as Drexel rallied from a four-point second half deficit to defeat St. Francis (Pa.), 61-57. It was the sixth straight win for the Dragons, who improved to 8-1 on the season. It is the best start for a Drexel team since the 1993-94 team opened the year 9-1.
The Dragons trailed by four with 8:26 to play, but went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Gerald Colds converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to one and on the next possession, he drove the lane once again, scoring on the play and getting fouled. Colds missed the free throw, but grabbed the offensive board, which led to a Givens' lay-in to put the Dragons up by three. The Drexel defense held the Red Flash (2-9) without a field goal for more than nine minutes during the late stages of the second half.
Givens was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor as he recorded his fifth double-double of the season. His 16 rebounds tied a career-high set last season against the Red Flash in Philadelphia. Colds scored 17 points and handed out three assist. The two players scored 21 of Drexel's 32 second half points.
Anthony Ervin scored a career-high 20 points for St. Francis. Chris Johnson and Mislav Jukic each scored 10 points. The Red Flash had 16 assists and committed just five turnovers in the game. Drexel once again controlled the glass, outrebounding the Red Flash, 36-22. The Dragons entered the week second in the nation in rebounding margin at +14.1.
The first half was tight the entire way, with neither team able to take more than a six-point advantage. There were five ties and seven lead changes in the half. Anthony Ervin had a huge opening 20 minutes for the Flash, scoring 15 of the team's 28 points. He was 7-for-9 from the floor. Chris Johnson had six assists for the Flash, who forced Drexel into eight turnovers in the game's first half. Givens had eight points and nine rebounds as the Dragons led by just one point at 29-28 heading to the locker room.
The Dragons are back in action on Wednesday night. Drexel will travel to the Carrier Dome to face No. 5 Syracuse at 7 p.m.
