Philadelphia, Pa. – Jamie Harris scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half as Drexel defeated Delaware, 68-60, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. With the victory the Dragons improved to 10-5 in the CAA, 15-12 overall and remained in a tie for fourth place in the CAA.
Harris nailed a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the first half to give Drexel a 35-32 lead at the break. The Dragons would not trail again, but the Blue Hens (7-19, 3-12) did not go down without a fight. Jawan Carter scored on a lay-up with 1:25 to play to cut Drexel's lead to three points at 61-58. On the Dragons' next possession, Gerald Colds missed a jumper but sophomore Kevin Phillip tipped in the miss to give the Dragons a five-point cushion. Drexel made five of six free throws in the final 35 seconds to record its 10th league win. It is the seventh time in the nine years that Drexel has won 10 or more CAA games, making it just one of four teams in the CAA to accomplish that feat.
Harris was 6-for-12 from the field and made three three-pointers. He also handed out four assists and played the entire game. Colds added 13 points and three assists. Phillip had a solid game off the bench with nine points and five rebounds. The Dragons shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and 48 percent in the game.
Carter led three Hens in double figures with 14 points. Alphonso Dawson added 13 points, while Jamelle Hagins had 10 points. Drexel held Delaware to just 37 percent shooting in the game, but the Hens made 17 of their 19 free throw attempts.
Drexel plays its next two games away from the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons face VCU on Tuesday night in Richmond at 7 p.m. and play at Bradley in a non-conference game on Saturday night in Peoria, Ill.
