Hempstead, N.Y. - Drexel split the 10 bouts against Hofstra but a forfeit at heavyweight helped the Pride take a 21-17 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association dual. Steve Mytych and Shawn Fausey each won by major decision while Mike Gomez, Brett McCurdy and Dave Woodall also pulled out victories.
The Dragons got off to a big start as Gomez earned a tough 2-1 win over Jamie Franco in the opening bout at 125 pounds. Mytych followed with a 10-2 major decision win over Luke Vaith to give Drexel a 7-0 lead. Hofstra picked up four points with a major decision win at 141 pounds but McCurdy gave the Dragons three points with a 10-3 win over Jeff Rotella at 149 pounds. Hofstra cut into the Drexel lead as Jonny Bonilla-Bowman earned a major decision win over Joe Booth, 21-11, as the Dragons entered the 165-pound match with a 10-8 lead.
The Pride earned their third win by major decision as P.J. Gillespie defeated Alex Rinaldi, 14-6, to take the lead. Woodall answered for Drexel with a key 6-5 decision over Jon Rothman. Holding on to a slim 13-12 lead and knowing the Dragons would be giving up six points at heavyweight with Kyle Frey injured, Drexel needed the next two matches to win the dual. In a tightly contested 184-pound match, Ben Clymer earned a 1-0 decision to seal the dual for Hofstra. Fausey earned four points for Drexel with a major decision win over Patrick Murphy at 197 pounds to give Drexel a brief 17-15 lead before the referee raised heavyweight Paul Snyder's hand as the winner by forfeit to give Hofstra a 21-17 win.
