Philadelphia, Pa. – UNC Wilmington held off a late Drexel rally to stun the Dragons in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 75-69. It was the third-straight loss for the Dragons, who fell to 10-7 in the CAA and 15-15 overall.
Drexel trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half before mounting a comeback. Chris Fouch scored on a lay-up with just over two minutes to play to cut it to 69-65. Fouch then came up with a steal, drove the lane and was fouled. He sank both free throws to make it a two-point deficit with 1:59 left. After UNCW's Darion Jeralds made one of two free throws, the Dragons had their chances to tie the game. Fouch's three-point attempt went in-and-out, but Samme Givens came up with a big offensive board. However, Gerald Colds was called for traveling with 38 seconds left and the Seahawks made five of their six free-throw attempts down the stretch to snap a four-game losing streak against Drexel.
The Seahawks (9-20, 5-12) ended the first half on a 12-4 run to take a 35-29 lead. Daryl Felder made two lay-ups in the final minutes after Drexel turnovers to key the run. UNCW committed just one turnover in the half, despite playing without Chad Tomko, who was out with an injury.
Johnny Wolf came off the bench to score 16 points for the Seahawks and hit two three-pointers in the second half. Trevor Deloach added 15 points and three three-pointers. Drexel was led by Fouch, who scored 15 points, but was just 1-for-8 from behind the arc. Jamie Harris scored 14, while Gerald Colds added 11 points and a career-best eight assists.
The loss snapped a five-game home winning streak for the Dragons, who ended the year with a 10-4 record at the DAC. The game marked the final home appearance for Drexel seniors Bill Lally, Evan Neisler, Leon Spencer and Kenny Tribbett. All four players were in the starting line-up.
Drexel plays its final regular-season game of the year on Saturday at James Madison. The 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Championship begins on March 5 in Richmond, Va.
