
Women's Varsity Eight Opens Spring with Second-Place Finish

Philadelphia - Drexel women's crew opened the 2009-10 spring season with a dual with regional rivals Delaware, La Salle and Saint Joseph's on the Schuylkill River. Highlighting the action was Drexel varsity eight boat earning second place in the Marlene Buckley boat finishing behind only Saint Joseph's. The Dragons' second varsity eight also posted a second-place finish in the John A. Daskalakis in a six-boat race. Due to adverse weather conditions, only eights raced in the dual.
The Drexel varsity eight boat featured coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Candace Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Casondra Clawson and bow Mary Kain. While the Hawks finished ahead of Drexel, the Dragons' top boat defeated third-place Delaware and fourth-place La Salle.
For the women's second varsity eight, the John A. Daskalakis boat with coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Natasha Martines, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Chloe Swansen, Asiya Mahmud and bow Brooke Wertan topped third-place La Salle and a pair of entries from Delaware. Saint Joseph's "B" boat finished sixth while the school's top second varsity eight boat was the only crew to cross the line ahead of Drexel in the race.
