Crew Sends 10 Boats to Compete in Murphy Cup on Schuylkill

Full Murphy Cup race schedule with heat match-ups
Philadelphia - After a solid showing at the San Diego Crew Classic, Drexel rowing returns to Philadelphia to compete against some of the region's top programs at the 2010 Murphy Cup on Saturday, April 3. The Dragons will make an appearance in the regatta's first race, the women's novice eight at 9:00 a.m. It will be the first of 10 boats Drexel Director of Rowing Paul Savell will be sending to the river to represent the Blue and Gold.
Drexel's women's novice eight in the John A. Daskalakis boat with coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, stroke Megan Bush, Danielle Frigerio, Amanda Dargay, Lillian Reed, Leila Aboharb, Elise Panacek, Kathie Cheng and bow Mairin McKinlay will race in the first of three heats with the winner of each heat advancing to the finals while the three best non-winning times will also clinch a spot in the women's novice eight final, scheduled to begin at 2:12 p.m. The Dragons' men's novice eight will compete in the first of two heats in which the top two finishers of each will book a finals spot while the two best non-winning times of the two heats will also advance to the 2:18 p.m. final. Coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Kurt Linton, Jason Browne, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Kam Palagi, Zach Antunes and bow Adam Cordi will be Drexel's entry in the Peggy Greenawalt.
The Dragons also will have a boat in one of the more hotly-contested competitions, the women's varsity four. Drexel will compete in the Sandi Sheller boat with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Jill Skovran, Chloe Swansen, Brogan Piecara and bow Brianna Simmers in the first of four heats at 9:42 a.m. with just the single-best non-winning time taking a spot in the final along with the winners of each heat. The final for the event is scheduled to begin at 2:36 p.m. In the men's varsity four, Drexel is placed in the second of three heats in the LeBow College of Business boat with coxswain Michelle Lehmann, stroke Michael Golden, Peter Eyrich, Kevin Rorabaugh and bow Brennan Haydon needing to win the race or posting one of the top two non-winning times to compete in the 2:42 p.m. final.
In novice four racing, Drexel men will be in the Dawn Byers boat with coxswain Matt Weston, stroke Nick Jensen, Kylan Siegfried, John Luciani and bow Paul Wisniowski competing in the second of three heats at 11:06 a.m. The winner of each heat will compete against the top three non-winners in the 2:48 p.m. final. Drexel's men's pair featuring Andrew Burns and Peter Schmidt will race in the second of two heats with the two finishers and the two best non-winners to the 3:06 p.m. final.
In second varsity eight competition, the women will race in the third of three heats while the men race in the first of two heats. The Drexel women in the Marlene Buckley with coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Natasha Martines, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Samantha Cowan, Asiya Mahmud and bow Brooke Wertan will need to win or post a top-three non-winning time to advance to the 3:24 p.m. final. The men, in the Annette Pennoni with coxswain Steve Matyas, stroke Filip Topalovic, Gregg Francis, Marty Khait, Chris Hillenbrand, Ernesto Del Valle, Lorenzo Albala, Liam O'Neill and bow Pat McGann, need to finish among the top two or register a top-two non-winning time to compete in the 3:30 p.m. final.
At 12:48 p.m. Drexel's women's varsity eight will challenge Lafayette, Jacksonville, Fordham and Colgate in the third of three heats for a spot in the 3:54 p.m. finals. The winner of the heat books a spot in the final while the two top non-winners among the three heats will also compete in the final. The next best six non-winners will compete in the petite final at 3:42 p.m. There are 16 women's varsity eight boats registered to compete for the Murphy Cup. Drexel's women's varsity eight line-up will be coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Candice Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Casondra Clawson and bow Mary Kain.
In men's varsity eight action, Drexel will compete in the second of three heats against Rutgers-Camden, Washington College, Jacksonville and Villanova at 1:06 p.m. The winner of the heat books a spot in the 4:00 p.m. final while the two top non-winners among the three heats will also compete in the final. The next best six non-winners will compete in the petite final at 3:36 p.m. There are 14 men's varsity eight boats registered to compete. The Dragons' boat will feature coxswain Randall Lee, Aleksander Radovic, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Greg Pierce, Brian Timlin, Will Masters, Nick Buyse and bow Jacob Sloan.
