Norfolk, Va. - For the second year in a row Drexel Tennis is making its mark at the CAA Tournament. Both Drexel's men's and women's teams defeated their first round opponents, George Mason, to open play at the 2010 conference tournament hosted by Old Dominion. The eighth-seeded Drexel men (7-7) blanked the Patriots, 5-0, for their second win over Mason in as many weeks. The ninth-seeded Drexel women (9-6) edged the Patriots 4-2 in a reversal of a 5-1 loss to George Mason a week ago.
In a stunning reversal of fortunes just a week after George Mason won a lop-sided 5-1 match at home againstt Drexel, the Dragons stepped up to dispatch the No. 8 Patriots in the first round. Elise Leizerovich won the clinching match at fifth singles for the Dragons, beating Meredith Cutchin 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Zineb Hilali also exacted her revenge on Kiersten Pappas in straight sets at first singles, while Gozde Unkaya made quick work of Lindsey Gray 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. The Dragons won at first and second doubles to earn the first team point of the match.
On the men's side, Drexel opened the day by winning at first and third doubles to garner a team point against Mason. Then Nikoloz Kurdadze and Bryan Nguyen opened singles play with straight-set wins at first and fourth singles, respectively, to get the Dragons rollling. Manu Bajpai and Jeganathan Srinivasan closed out their opponents at second and fifth singles, also in two sets, to clinch the match victory for Drexel.
The men advance to play top-seeded William & Mary at 2:00 tomorrow, while the women will also play the top seed in their bracket; the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth in a 2:00 p.m. match at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
