Dragons Honor Top Performances of 2009-10 Season at Annual Basketball Awards Banquet

Philadelphia – Drexel men's basketball took an evening to honor team and individual accomplishments from the 2009-2010 season in its annual awards banquet held in the DAC. Nine Dragons took to the stage as their personal achievements were recognized in front of family, friends and teammates.
Sophomore Samme Givens was presented with the “Sweep” Award for his rebounding performance off the glass this year as he brought down an average of 8.3 per game. Forward Kevin Phillips earned Team Most Improved Player accolades this past season. Phillips, a sophomore, was called upon in 31 games averaging more than 12 minutes per game. Phillips also improved his field goal percentage by more than four times, shooting an average of .545 from the floor.
Derrick Thomas became the first freshman in the Bruise Flint era to receive the award for best defensive performance when he accepted the Dragon “D” Award. Thomas started in 31 of 32 games for Flint and averaged 2.6 boards and 31 steals. On the offensive side of the court, junior guard Jamie Harris took home the Assists Award with 110 in 32 games. Harris was 10th overall in the CAA with an average of 3.4 assists per game.
Graduating senior guard Bill Lally showed dedication both on-and-off the court as he was honored with this year's Academic Award. Lally totes the team's highest GPA while majoring in sport management. Junior Yannick Formbor and senior Kenny Tribbett were also recognized for their commitment on-and-off the court as the two forwards shared the Donald Shank Spirit and Dedication Award.
Harris closed out the evening by receiving the team's highest honor: Most Valuable Player. Harris started all 32 games for the Dragons and averaged 14.5 points per game, recorded the most assists with 110 and tied for the second most steals at 32. Harris also led the team in free-throw percentage shooting .797 from the stripe during the season. Harris also garnered a Third Team All-CAA selection as well as a Second Team All-District selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
The Dragons ended their season sixth in the CAA going 16-16 overall and 11-7 in conference play. In all, Drexel is graduating four seniors this year, however, Harris will return to defend his MVP title with coach Flint at the DAC next season.
