
Women's Crew Finishes Third at Colonial Athletic Association Championships

Fairfax Station, Va. - Drexel women's crew took third in the overall points as well as third in the women's varsity eight race at the 2010 Women's Rowing Colonial Athletic Association Championships. Buffalo captured its first CAA Women's Rowing championship, edging out defending-champion Northeastern by a single point at Sandy Run Regional Park on the Occoquan Reservoir. Drexel's Candace Webb and Dana Haneman were named First Team All-CAA for their performance.
Drexel opened action at the conference championships with a fourth-place finish from the varsity four as coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Brooke Wertan, Brianna Simmers, Jill Skovran and bow Chloe Swansen finished in 7:46.2 to claim three team points while Buffalo won the race at 7:30.3. The women's second varsity eight race featured the Marlene Buckley with coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Natasha Martines, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Samantha Cowan, Megan Bush and bow Asiya Mahmud. The Marlene Buckley finished in third place, just 1.2 seconds behind second-place Northeastern as the Dragons were credited with a time of 6:52.9 and eight team points.
The marquee event featured Drexel's varsity eight with coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Candice Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Casondra Clawson and bow Mary Kain. The Dragons finished third to earn 12 points as they finished behind Northeastern and Buffalo with a time of 6:43.6, just 1.8 seconds behind the defending champions from Buffalo. Though Northeastern won the varsity eight the Huskies fell one point short in the overall team title.
