
Drexel Crew to Race Against Nation's Best at the 2010 Dad Vail Regatta

Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel Crew will compete in the 72nd annual Dad Vail regatta on the Schuylkill River as the Dragons send six men's and four women's shells to race in opening heats on Friday, May 7 before Saturday's semifinals and finals. The Dragons will compete against over 100 other universities and colleges from the United States and Canada in the nation's biggest collegiate rowing event.
Competition begins for Drexel Friday morning at 7:42 with the men's varsity four in heat seven of nine rowing the Tobey and Kim Oxholm with coxswain Michelle Lehmann, stroke Michael Gartland, Peter Eyrich, Kevin Rorabaugh and bow Brennan Haydon in lane four. They will race Northwestern, Oklahoma City, Lehigh, Catholic and John Carroll with the top two times advancing to the semi-finals.
Next, at 8:59, the women's varsity four will launch the Sandra Lee Sheller in heat four of six with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Brooke Wertan, Brianna Simmers, Jill Skovran and bow Chloe Swansen in lane three. They will compete with Fairfield, Iona, Purdue, Lowell and Western Ontario with the top three times moving on.
Drexel's men's varsity pair will race in heat two of six at 9:27 with Liam O'Neill at stroke and Pete Schmidt in bow. The duo will take on Marquette, Loyola, Lafayette, Grand Valley and Milwaukee from lane three with the best two times advancing. Last season, Drexel's men's pair earned a berth in the grand finals at Dad Vail.
The Dragons then launch the men's varsity eight boat with a race start time of 10:45 in heat two of five with coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Aleksander Radovic, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Greg Pierce, Brian Timlin, Will Masters, Nick Buyse and bow Jake Sloan. They will face Delaware, Brock, Temple, Georgia Tech and Villanova from lane six with the best two times advancing, a last place elimination and the remaining field moving to repechage races.
The women's varsity eight then takes to the water with a race time of 11:50. The Dragons will row in heat five of six with coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Candice Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Cassie Clawson and bow Mary Kain. Rowing in lane three, they will race against Vermont, La Salle, San Diego State, Old Dominion and Oklahoma City with the top two boats moving to the semi-finals event, last place eliminated and the third, fourth and fifth place finishers moving to repechage races. The boat is coming off of a victory at the Bergen Cup Regatta where the Dragons claimed the city championship of Philadelphia Dad Vail schools.
The men's freshman and novice four events will open the afternoon with Drexel sending the Dawn Byers into heat eight of nine at 12:49. Coxswain Matt Weston, stroke Nick Jensen, Dylan Siegfried, John Luciani and bow Corey Barnes will take on Carnegie Mellon, Lawrence, Villanova, Montreal and Clarkson from lane three advancing only the top two times.
After the novice four events there will be a break from qualifying heats when the repechage races begin at 2:55. Men's varsity eight boats race at 2:55, 3:00 and 3:05 with the top two times from each heat advancing to the semi-final event. Women's varsity eight races follow at 3:10, 3:15 and 3:25 again with the best two times from each heat moving through to the semi-final races.
Drexel's men's freshman and novice eight picks up the qualifying action again at 3:51. It will race in heat four of four in the Vince Vidas with coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Kurt Linton, Adam Cordi, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Kam Palagi, Zach Antunes and bow Paul Wisniowski. They will face Washington College, Pittsburgh, Delaware and Penn State from lane three with the top three times moving through to semi-finals.
The women's freshman and novice eight events follow. Drexel will send the John A. Daskalakis down lane one in heat four of five at 4:19. Coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, stroke Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek, Leila Aboharb, Lillian Reed, Brogan Piecara, Mairin McKinlay, Kathie Cheng and bow Danielle Frigerio will race against Liberty, Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts and Binghamton with the quickest three boats locking spots in the semi-final.

The Dragons will launch the Annette Pennoni with coxswain Steve Matyas, stroke Filip Topalovic, Gregg Francis, Marty Khait, Chris Hillenbrand, Ernesto Del Valle, Lorenzo Albala, Michael Golden and bow Pat McGann to challenge Emory, Georgia Tech, Virginia and the US Military Academy as the top two times advance straight to the final event.
The women's second varsity eight qualifiers will cap the day for Drexel when it sends the Marlene Buckley in the last of five heats at 5:00. Coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Natasha Martines, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Samantha Cowan, Megan Bush and bow Asiya Mahmud will face Marist, Delaware, Purdue and Villanova from lane four with the top two times again advancing straight to the finals.
