Philadelphia - After completing a stellar collegiate playing career that will live in Drexel's record books and the memories of its fans in perpetuity, senior Gabriela Marginean added another first to her list of achievements at Drexel. She became the first women's basketball player drafted by a team in the Women's National Basketball Association when, with the second pick of the third round, the Minnesota Lynx selected Marginean as the 26th overall pick.
The Lynx also drafted Virginia's Monica Wright and Nebraska's Kelcey Griffin in the first round. Griffin was promptly traded for draft picks.
At Drexel Marginean broke school, conference and Philadelphia records for scoring while leading the Dragons to their first ever CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009 and its first ever WNIT bid after the 2010 season. She also became Drexel's first ever All-American this season, earning Honorable Mention Associated Press All-America honors after her senior season. Marginean completed her playing career with 2,581 points, 947 rebounds and 203 steals.
She joins Michelle Maslowski ('02), Catherine Scanlon ('06) and Kira Karlstrom ('07) as former Dragons who have gone on to play professional basketball, all three spent time playing in Europe after graduating from Drexel.
Marginean will join a team that includes former college All-American's Charde Houston, Seimone Agustus and Candice Wiggins. Marginean will also have the chance to team up with a former CAA rival, Virginia Commonwealth's Quanitra Hollingsworth. The Lynx finished second to last in the Western Division last season with a 14-20 record, they open the 2010 season at Tulsa on May 15.
