Box Score
Philadelphia - Freshman Sam Greenfield scored her first career goal and Drexel's keepers Victoria Troccoli and Nicole Sinclair made it stand up for a 1-0 shutout victory over Lafayette (2-1). The Drexel (2-3) victory snapped a three-match losing streak and helped the Dragons remain undefeated at home this season.
After toiling through the majority of a scoreless first half, the Dragons generated a patient offensive build up which resulted in a Sam Greenfield goal just before halftime. Julia Speroni served a ball to the middle of the goal box where Greenfield skillfully held off her defender, then gathered the bouncing ball and struck a half volley to the right side of the goal, past keeper Lauren Smedley.
Lafayette edged Drexel in shots 12 to 11 and the Dragons held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The majority of good scoring chances were by Drexel in the first half. Jenna Lindsay twice attempted to slice a cross in the goal box over to Alex Vazquez, but on both occaisions the connection was just shy of its mark.
In the second half it was more of the same for Drexel. Courtney Wylie but a blast on goal from 20 yards out on the right side, but Smedley was equal to that test in the 65th minute.
After coming on at halftime, senior goalie Nicole Sinclair finished off the shutout started by Victoria Troccoli. One of her top plays in the period came in the 80th minute when perfectly timed a spint off her line to the right side of the goal box and a served ball arrived to meet a Lafayette forward. Sinclair scuttled the chance by pouncing on the ball just before the Leopard could strike.
Both Troccoli and Sinclair made two saves in goal for Drexel. Smedley stopped five for Lafayette in the loss.
The Dragons return to action next Sunday, Sept. 12 when they host Wagner at Vidas Field at 1:00 p.m.
