Philadelphia – Hofstra scored seven straight points to turn a one-point deficit into a six point lead in the final minutes to defeat Drexel, 75-69, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The win dropped the Dragons record to 9-3 overall and evened their mark in Colonial Athletic Association play at 1-1. Hofstra improved to 8-5 and 2-0 in the CAA.
Drexel took a 62-61 lead with 2:59 remaining in the game when Dartaye Ruffin hit a pair of free throws. Hofstra took the lead for good less than a minute later when Shemiye McLendon made a pair of free throws for his first and only points of the game. The Pride come up with a stop on defense and Charles Jenkins raced the length of the court for a lay-up to increase the lead to three. Drexel had a chance to answer on the next possession, but Chris Fouch had his three-point attempt bounce off the rim and the Pride's Mike Moore scored a bucket and was fouled. He made the free throw and the Pride took a 68-62 lead with one minute left in the game. Drexel was able to cut the lead to three on a Gerald Colds lay-in with five seconds remaining, but David Imes iced the game with another three-point play with just one second left.
Samme Givens led Drexel with a career-high 25 points. The junior was 10-for-18 shooting and also had eight boards and two blocks. Ruffin added a career-best 16 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Drexel shot just 38 percent in the game and only 30 percent in the first half as the team went to half down by seven points at 34-27. The Dragons outrebounded the Pride, 44-31 and had 18 offensive boards.
Jenkins led Hofstra with 23 points and was 11-for-12 from the line. Imes, who came into the game averaging just 6.8 points per game, scored a career-best 20 points and was 8-for-8 from the floor. Moore added 11 points and nine rebounds. The Pride shot 48 percent in the game and scored 18 points off Drexel turnovers.
The Dragons will try to rebound on Wednesday night, when they visit VCU at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on The Comcast Network.
