Box Score
The Drexel women's soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory at George Mason on Sunday afternoon in Fairfax. The Dragons scored twice in the first half and held on to improve to 4-4-2 in CAA play this season.
Jenna Lindsay got the Dragons (6-8-4) on the board early in the contest. Freshman Megan Hammaker fed Lindsay who blasted a shot from 14 yards out just inside the far post. It was goal number six on the season for the senior and the 25th of her career, and it gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the match. Drexel would add to the lead about 20 minutes later. Junior Jess Lowinger fed a cross in front of the net where Jess Sarkisian put it home for the Dragons second goal of the match.
George Mason (7-6-5, 4-3-3) was held off the board until the 87th minute. With just 3:50 to play, Nicole Peters headed in a ball to break up the shutout. It was the only goal Eve Badana would give up. She made five saves on the day.
Eve Badana made five saves in picking up the victory for the Dragons.
It was Drexel's first win on the road this season, and couldn't have come at a better time. Drexel now has 14 points with one match remaining and is tied with the Blue Hens for seventh in the CAA. The top six teams make the CAA Tournament. Drexel's playoff fate will be determined next Sunday, when the Dragons' close the 2011 regular season with a match at Delaware on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
