BOX SCORE
HAVERFORD, Pa. - Playing their first varsity match in the history of Drexel squash, the women's squash team played well but were defeated at Haverford, 6-3. Davila Thompson, Anna Schmiedicke and Nur Atiqah Shah Shahrin earned the three individual points for the Dragons in an effort that had head coach John White pleased with his team's start.
"I was pleasantly surprised with how we competed," White said following the match. "I think we did a very good job in our first effort as a team and this gives us something to build on, no doubt about it."
Davila Thompson will go down in the record books as the first Dragon to earn a point in a varsity squash match, earning a victory in what was, perhaps, the match of the night. Facing Haverford's Kira Jones at the second spot on the ladder, Thompson won in straight sets, though all three went into extra time. Thompson grinded out a 14-12 victory in the first set, but Jones would not go away, pushing Thompson to the edge in both the second and third sets before falling 12-10 each time.
Thompson was the fourth victor off the courts, pulling Drexel back into the match at 3-1. It was tied before long, as Nur Atiqah Shah Shahrin defeated Miriam Fuchs at No. 9, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6, and Anna Schmiedicke finished her match at No. 3 moments later, defeating Katherine Pryor 11-6, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8.
The match tied with three still on the court, Drexel could not muster another point, with Alex Love's victory over Zeba Ahmed at No. 7 clinching the match for Haverford. Alyssa Marciano put up a strong fight at No. 5 and was the final player off the courts after dropping her match to Randee Johnson, 11-6, 13-11, 9-11, 11-1.
