Box Score
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – Drexel's stellar defensive effort wasn't enough as the Dragons fell to Virginia, 49-35, at the Paradise Jam. Samme Givens had his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Drexel's record dropped to 1-2, while Virginia improved to 3-1.
Drexel's defense turned it up a notch to start the second half and held Virginia off the board for the first seven minutes. In fact, the Cavaliers scored just three points in the first 14 minutes of the second half. Drexel cut the lead to 31-25 on a Samme Givens bucket with just over 10 minutes remaining, but Drexel's offense was unable to cut the lead closer than that down the stretch. Virginia made 18 of 21 free throws to seal the contest. That made up for the Cavaliers shooting just 4-for-17 (.235) in the second half and 36 percent in the game.
Virginia raced out to an early 7-0 lead before Drexel got on the board for the first time. The Dragons fought back and trimmed the Cavaliers' lead to just two at 12-10 with 8:23 left in the first half. Drexel played well for stretches defensively, holding the Cavaliers to just one field goal over a span of four minutes, but struggled on the offensive end. Virginia ended the half with a 16-4 run to take control of the contest at 28-14. The Dragons shot 18 percent in the first half (4-for-22) and committed 10 turnovers against the Cavaliers' stingy defense. Despite a better offensive second half, Drexel finished the game shooting less than 26 percent from the floor.
Frantz Massenat led Drexel with 12 points. The sophomore had a pair of three-pointers, both coming early in the game. Massenat and Givens were the only Dragons to reach double figures in scoring and accounted for all but 13 of Drexel's points. Mike Scott led Virginia with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He was only 6-for-14 from the floor but sank eight free throws.
Drexel will conclude its first trip to the Paradise Jam on Monday afternoon. The Dragons will face either Drake or Winthrop.
