St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – Frantz Massenat scored a career-high 23 points as Drexel (2-2) snapped out of its shooting slump with 11 three-pointers in a 68-45 victory against Winthrop in the Paradise Jam. It was the team's final game in the tournament.
Drexel came in to the game shooting just 9-for-50 (.180) from behind the arc in its first three games, but sank 11 in just 21 attempts this afternoon against Winthrop (0-5). The Dragons opened the game with a 14-1 run and held the Eagles without a field goal for more than seven minutes to start the game. Drexel knocked down six three-pointers in the first half and opened up a 16-point lead before the Eagles trimmed the margin to 31-22 at intermission. The teams exchanged three-pointers to begin the half and that would be as close as Winthrop would get the rest of the way. The Drexel defense held Winthrop to just nine field goals in the second half and outrebounded the Eagles, 36-23.
Massenat, whose career-high for three-pointers in a game was two, surpassed that milestone midway through the first half. The Ewing, N.J. product finished 6-for-8 from behind the three-point stripe. Derrick Thomas and Samme Givens each added 12 points. Thomas knocked down a pair of treys, while Givens was 4-for-5 from the floor and perfect in four attempts from the line. Dartaye Ruffin came off the bench to finish with 10 points and nine rebounds. Damion Lee, this week's CAA Rookie of the Week, added nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Winthrop was led by Andre Jones, who scored 18 points.
Drexel will head back to the mainland on Tuesday and will be off for the holiday. The Dragons next game will be on conclude its first trip to the Paradise Jam on Monday afternoon. The Dragons will face Saint Joseph's on Nov. 30 in their next contest.
