AKRON, Ohio - The Drexel women's basketball team will conclude play at this year's Preseason WNIT on Saturday evening, when they take on the Akron Zips at Akron's Rhodes Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Dragons are looking to emerge from the Preseason WNIT with a 2-1 record after winning Friday night's consolation opener 61-56 over Detroit.
Saturday's game is the first of five consecutive true road games for Drexel, which will not return home to the Daskalakis Athletic Center until Dec. 19 against La Salle. The Dragons were 5-9 on the road last season.
Drexel is facing off with Akron for the first time in the history of the two programs. The same was true of Drexel and Detroit, with the Dragons playing lock down defense to shut down the Titans' impressive interior players in the first half, building a double-digit lead. Taylor Wootton and Tyler Hale scored 14 points each to lead the way for Drexel, while Hollie Mershon contributed 12 and Kamile Nacickaite added nine points, all of which came in the second half.
Akron is also 1-1 in the Preseason WNIT thus far this season, having lost at No. 2 Notre Dame to open its season, 81-61. On Friday night, the Zips were taken to the brink by Howard, which led by as many as 10 in the second half before Akron got a lay-up with six seconds to go that put the Zips up by two. Howard had two free throws to tie it with 1.5 to play, but hit just one of two and lost, 64-63.
The Dragons and Zips will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Live video is available through Akron's website.
