BOX SCORE
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The offense for the Drexel women's basketball team was there on Monday night at Seton Hall, but for the first time all season, the Dragons' defense let them down as they fell to the Pirates, 77-64. Kamile Nacickaite put up 25 points and Hollie Mershon added 17 to pace the Dragons.
Nacickaite was prolific for the Dragons in the first half, while Mershon took over in the second. The game got off to a scorching start, with the up-and-down pace keeping the referees from blowing a dead ball that would force a media timeout until 9:17 remained in the half. Both teams were hitting on all cylinders from outside, with the Dragons hitting 5-of-7 from downtown in the first half and Seton Hall knocking down 9-of-13.
Terry Green hit all five of her three-point attempts, all of which came in the first half. She finished with 17 points. Jasmine Crew led Seton Hall with 22.
Nicole Jones put in a lay-up with 9:01 to play, knotting the score at 20 apiece. With three media timeouts coming in quick succession, however, the momentum that the Dragons' offense was building ground to a halt, and Seton Hall went on an 11-0 run. The Pirates would finish the half on a 25-9 push after that tie, building a lead the Dragons would not be able to overcome in the second half.
At halftime, Nacickaite had 18 of Drexel's 25 points. By game's end, she would move into 12th place all-time at Drexel with 1,223 career points.
After the break, the Dragons were slow to get started offensively, while Seton Hall proved content to let the shot clock run down and find looks late in the clock. Neither team was hitting from the outside at the same clip as the first half, but time was on Seton Hall's side and they milked that to their advantage.
Noting this, head coach Denise Dillon sent the Dragons into an attacking, pressing defense. While it flustered the Pirates, the Dragons - outside of Mershon, who scored 15 of her 17 in the second half - were still unable to capitalize much offensively, and Seton Hall was eventually able to solve the Dragon press. Drexel cut the lead to single digits with just over 2:00 to play, but it was not enough as the Pirates hit their free throws down the stretch and held on.
Having not played in eight days, the Dragons will now take another week off before returning to the court on Monday. Then, they will host La Salle at 7:00 p.m. in their first home game in over a month.
