PHILADELPHIA - At the end of a tough match for the Drexel wrestling team, senior Kyle Frey provided a highlight when he earned a victory in the heavyweight match. Unfortunately for the Dragons, those were the only points the team could muster in its match with No. 22 Virginia on Sunday as they fell, 39-3.
Frey, who entered the match 10-2 on the year, kept up his strong season by earning a quick takedown of Ethan Hayes, and following that with a two-point near fall. Frey maintained that edge throughout the rest of the match, producing a 6-2 decision to keep the Cavaliers from posting a shutout.
Drexel nearly got on the board a match earlier, when Brandon Palik fell in a hard-fought battle at 197 lbs, 3-1 to Ryan Malo. After Malo got an escape point in the second period, Palik answered with one of his own, grappling out of Malo's grasp in the third period. With the score knotted at one, the match went into overtime before Malo was able to outlast Palik and get a takedown for the 3-1 victory.
Earlier in the day, Shane Fenningham took a 1-0 lead into the third period before his opponent at 149 lbs., Shawn Harris, put together four points on two escapes and a takedown in the final two minutes.
The Dragons will now have ten days off, after which they will return to the mats on Dec. 29 at the Lock Haven Invitational. They will then open CAA play at Hofstra on Jan. 8.
