Box Score
Towson, Md. – Derrick Thomas scored 19 points and Dartaye Ruffin scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as Drexel held off a pesky Towson team for its 20th win of the season, 66-63. Towson had the last possession but a Towson three-point attempt bounced off the rim. With the win, the Dragons (20-9, 11-7 CAA) earned the fifth-seed in the upcoming CAA Championship. They will face this same Towson team (4-25, 0-18) on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Towson's Isaiah Philmore's fadeaway jumper from the baseline cut Drexel's lead to 64-60. Drexel came downcourt and Thomas was fouled. He converted one of two from the line to put the Dragons ahead, 64-61. The Drexel defense held, but the offense couldn't score and the Tigers' Dre Connor was fouled by Thomas going for a loose ball. He made both to trim the lead to one point. Towson pressed, Drexel was able to inbound the ball, but Dartaye Ruffin was called for traveling with 37 seconds left. The Tigers missed a shot and had three put backs to try and tie it. Finally Derrick Thomas came up with the board. He made both free throws to put Drexel up by three points. Towson tried to tie it up, but Brian Morris' three-point attempt just missed as the Tigers dropped their 18th-straight game.
Towson came out shooting on Senior Day at the Towson Center. The Tigers started the game 5-for-5 from behind the arc and took a 26-22 lead. Drexel closed the half with an 8-2 run to take a 35-32 lead at intermission. The Dragons, who opened the game by making six straight shots, finished 54 percent from the field in the first half. Thomas led the charge with 12 points and made five of his seven shots in the first half. Gerald Colds handed out seven of his career-high nine assists in the half and Daryl McCoy, who fouled out in just eight minutes against VCU, rebounded with 10 boards in the half. Josh Brown had a huge half for Towson, scoring 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting and was perfect in three attempts from long range.
Thomas led the Dragons with 19 points. He was 7-for-11 from the floor. Ruffin had another big game off the bench with those 15 points and nine rebounds. The Dragons shot 50 percent in the game and outrebounded the Tigers, 40-29. Brown led Towson with 21 points. Philmore had 15 points and 10 boards.
The winner of the Drexel-Towson game on Friday will face VCU, who lost to James Madison today and is the fourth seed.
