Philadelphia – Drexel hits the mat once again to close out a four game home-stand with two challenging match-ups this weekend against the Boston University Terriers and the Brown University Bears. The Dragons are coming off of a tough loss to conference opponent Hofstra that saw sophomore Joe Booth, 165 pounds, defeat nationally ranked P.J. Gillespie of the Pride with a sudden victory takedown to keep his unbeaten streak alive in CAA action.
Drexel is preparing for the conference tournament as well as for an opportunity to compete in nationals held this year in Philadelphia's very own Wells Fargo Center. Booth has set himself up nicely for such a run by defeating Gillespie and earning CAA Co-Wrestler of the Week honors.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Palik has also been enjoying a successful season picking up 15 wins overall and a 3-1 conference mark while currently leading the Dragons with five pins. Senior Justin Wieller continues with a thriving second half of the season going 6-3 in his last nine bouts while picking up a 2-2 conference record to hold fourth-place in the CAA at 174 pounds.
Drexel's heavy weight, sophomore Jack Callender, boasts a third-place standing in the CAA with a 3-1 conference record after picking up one of Drexel's four wins against Hofstra. Teammate Austin Sommer holds fourth place at 149 pounds in the CAA with a 2-2 record, 13-8 overall. Sommer has picked up two major decisions and two pins in his rookie year as a Dragon.
Drexel hosts Boston on Friday, Feb. 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center in its second to last conference dual of the season. Boston holds an impressive 7-5-1 record after picking up its fifth straight win in a dual against Army over the weekend. The Terriers trailed 12-11 after six bouts only to pick up the final four straight match-ups to earn the ultimate win. The two teams last met in the 2009-10 season when the Dragons trounced the Terriers in a 31-9 win in Massachusetts where Boston forfeited two matches.
On Saturday, Feb. 5, Drexel welcomes Brown to the DAC in a non-conference match up starting at 12:00 p.m. The Bears are coming off two straight losses at the hands of Army, 28-13 and No. 11 in the coaches poll Lehigh, 43-3. In their last meeting, Drexel picked up seven out of the 10 bouts with four bonus-point matches and the ultimate 27-9 team victory over Brown.
